Fishing options out of Brisbane are endless. If you can manage to drive past the brilliant fishing that lies within Moreton Bay and cross the South Passage Bar, some great fishing can be had. I’ve only been out there a handful of times, but each time we have returned with memorable catches.
When exploring new ground, unsure of what to expect, I generally try multiple techniques to see what fish are around. The most reliable technique I use when exploring new ground is live baiting. It is rare that a predatory fish will overlook a well presented livebait, and a huge variety of fish can be targeted using baits like Slimey Mackeral and Yakkas. Find the reef, drop a livebait, and see what’s there. Sound simple? It is! I’ve caught countless great species with this technique, and found new ground which I have then hit with Jigs and plastics.
Tie 80lb Flurocarbon leader to your 50lb Braid. Run a ball sinker on the leader (pick a size that will get you to where the fish are given the current and drift speed), then tie an 8/0 Gamakatsu Octopus CIrcle hook to the end. Pin the livebait in the nose, then send it down. It really is that simple.
The best part of this technique on new ground is never knowing what you will bring up. Try it sometime
Cheers
