I often get asked about what rig I use when targeting snapper in SA so here it is.
A Running rig. The rig consists of Silver Thread Shock Leader 50lb, you can use 20lb up to what ever you like. I use 50lb mainly for abrasion resistance as a lot of my snapper fishing is around man made structure. I use a slider for my sinker with a clip allowing sinker weight changing depending on water movement very quick and easy. In Between the slider and swivel I use a soft lumo bead, this stops the slider hitting your knot on the swivel constantly which can cause the knot to become weak. My trace is around 45cm long to allow the bait to move and swing in the current making it look realistic and on the end I have a twin snelled Gamakatsu 7/0-9/0 Octopus hooks or Octopus Circle. Hook size depends on bait used and fish targeted.
I find the running rig to be my most successful rig, this allows the fish to pick up the bait, feeling no resistance giving them time to swallow the bait before setting the hooks, I find snapper will quite often drop a bait if they feel weight or resistance on the other end!
